Modern Street Ballads. With ... illustrations
John Ashton's 1888 anthology of nineteenth-century English street ballads, published in London by Chatto & Windus for antiquarian and general readers, reprinting broadside texts with the crude woodcuts that accompanied them. The cuts are small black-line figures on bare ground — dandies, sailors, bonneted women, half-length heads — drawn with coarse hatching and heavy outline, useful as spot illustrations, character vignettes and period costume reference.
