The Cruise round the World of the Flying Squadron 1869-1870, under the command of Rear Admiral G. T. Phipps-Hornby. (Compiled by J. B., with the assistance of Henry Cavendish.) [With plates and a map
A narrative of the Royal Navy's Flying Squadron cruise of 1869-70 under Rear Admiral G. T. Phipps-Hornby, compiled by "J. B." with Henry Cavendish and published in London by J. D. Potter in 1871 for naval readers and the interested public. The seventeen chromolithograph plates are wide, low-horizon views - masted squadrons anchored off Plymouth, a verandahed Government House at Toorak, hillside towns, thatched Pacific villages - printed in pale greens, ochres and rust with small-capital captions along the lower edge, useful for muted landscape washes, ship silhouettes and colonial architecture.
