The Merry Ballads of the Olden Time, illustrated in pictures & rhyme
A Victorian picture book issued by Frederick Warne & Co. in London in 1880, retelling old English ballads such as Dick Whittington in short rhymed verses for young readers. The illustrations are sepia and brown line drawings set into and around the type, showing doublet-and-hose figures, crowned kings, cloaked maidens, suitors, house fronts and interiors, with ruled borders and text blocks shaped to fit the drawings integer designers can borrow for page layouts, costume figures and narrative vignettes.
