The Baptistery ... By the author of “The Cathedral” [i.e. Isaac Williams]. Third edition

WILLIAMS, Isaac - Fellow of Trinity College, Oxford · 1846 · John Henry Parker · 33 pictures

A devotional poem sequence of 1846, Isaac Williams's The Baptistery, issued in Oxford and London by John Henry Parker for Anglo-Catholic readers of the Oxford Movement, its plates copied in outline from Boëtius à Bolswert's seventeenth-century Flemish emblem series on the way of eternal life. The thirty-three engravings are pure contour line without shading, stacking tiers of heaven, earth and hellmouth in one frame: radiant sunbursts ringed by seated elders, crowds of pilgrims, winged guides, grotesque devils with pitchforks, and a crucifix on a hillside, all usable as clean vector-ready allegorical diagrams.
