BARRINGTON, George. · 1810 · M. Jones · 20 pictures

A popular account of the British penal colony at New South Wales, compiled under the name of transported convict George Barrington and published by M. Jones in London in 1810 for readers at home curious about Botany Bay. The hand-coloured engravings show single Australian animals and birds — kangaroo, dingo, emu, hornbill — standing on small turf mounds against blank paper, with engraved script captions and imprint lines, giving designers isolated animal figures already cut free of background.
