BARROW, John - Sir, Bart · 1806 · T. Cadell & W. Davies · 21 pictures

John Barrow's account of a 1792-93 voyage to Cochin China with an appended overland journey to the Booshuana chief, published in London by Cadell & Davies in 1806 for readers following Britain's Asian and African trade interests. Hand-coloured aquatint plates give harbour views of Porto Praya, Funchal and Rio with anchored warships and small boats, outline coastal profiles washed in pale blue and ochre, and figure groups of hunters with spears; useful for ship silhouettes, layered mountain horizons and soft topographical colour.
