Heinrich Barth's German-language journal of his 1849-1855 expedition across North and Central Africa, undertaken for the British government and issued in 1857 with maps, wood engravings and plates for a European reading public. The engravings are small landscape vignettes in fine parallel hatching: flat-topped massifs, volcanic cones rising from water, a distant walled town across a bay, with tiny figures for scale and open sky worked in ruled cloud bands.
