A German-language travel narrative by Heinrich Barth, published in 1857 as the journal of his British-government expedition across North and Central Africa from 1849 to 1855, aimed at European geographers and general readers. The wood engravings, cut from Barth's own field sketches, show mud-walled towns with crenellated ramparts, domed huts, hill settlements among cultivated terraces, and ruined forts, drawn with fine horizontal hatching for sky and small figures set in for scale.
