The pictures are wood-engraved chapter openers combining ornamental initials with corps badges, shields marked with unit numbers and stars, small battle or camp vignettes set inside the letter, and trailing foliate scrollwork below ""drop caps, heraldic shield shapes and decorative tailpieces ready for reuse.
