Bartlett, W. H. (William Henry), BEATTIE, William - M.D · 1836 · George Virtue · 51 pictures

A two-volume topographical travel account of Switzerland by William Beattie, illustrated from drawings made on the spot by W. H. Bartlett and published by George Virtue in London in 1836 for British armchair travellers and tourists. The steel engravings are horizontal landscape plates — lakes, alpine valleys, castles and lakeside chateaux framed by foreground trees and small figures — printed in fine grey tones useful for soft aerial-perspective backdrops, silhouetted tree framing and distant mountain profiles.
