Illustrations of the Passes of the Alps, by which Italy communicates with France, Switzerland, and Germany

BROCKEDON, William. · 1877 · H. G. Bohn · 56 pictures

William Brockedon's survey of the Alpine passes linking Italy with France, Switzerland and Germany, first issued in London in the late 1820s and reprinted here by H. G. Bohn in 1877 for travellers and armchair tourists. Fifty-six fine steel engravings, printed pale on wide margins and mostly turned sideways on the page, show gorges, zigzag post roads, galleries cut in rock, bridges and small files of mules and carriages; useful for delicate line texture, aerial recession and tiny figures giving scale.
