The Story of New York ... Illustrations by L. J. Bridgman

BROOKS, Elbridge Streeter. · 1888 · D. Lothrop Co. · 40 pictures

A popular history of New York written for young American readers by Elbridge Streeter Brooks and published in Boston by D. Lothrop Co. in 1888, with illustrations by L. J. Bridgman. The forty plates are pen-and-ink drawings in loose, scratchy hatching: clustered colonial figures in hats and breeches, ships nearing a low shoreline, crowds gathered on riverbanks and at village fences, each set in a ruled frame with a small-capitals caption below, useful for period costume groups and sketchy crowd staging.
