Tom Brown's School Days. By an Old Boy [i.e. Thomas Hughes]. Third edition

HALL, Sydney Prior., HUGHES, Arthur - Artist, BROWN, Tom. · 1869 · Macmillan & Co. · 60 pictures

An illustrated edition of Thomas Hughes's 1857 school novel Tom Brown's School Days, issued by Macmillan in London in 1869 with wood-engraved designs by Arthur Hughes and Sydney Prior Hall for boys and family readers. The plates and in-text vignettes show mid-Victorian schoolboys, masters, coaches and country inns in fine pen-style hatching, with crowded interiors, fights and farewells that supply period costume, horse-drawn transport and tightly grouped figure staging.
