Select Views of the Royal Palaces of Scotland ... With illustrative descriptions ... by the late Rev. John Jamieson ... Second edition

JAMIESON, John - D.D. of Edinburgh, BROWN, William - Secretary to the Literary and Antiquarian Society of Perth · 1840 · A. Fullarton & Co. · 40 pictures

A second edition of an antiquarian plate book on Scotland's royal palaces, issued by A. Fullarton & Co. in 1840 with views drawn by William Brown of Perth and descriptive text by the late John Jamieson, aimed at antiquarians and touring readers. The steel engravings by W. Miller and W. Forrest place castles and palaces far off across lochs or fields, framed by wind-bent pines, boulders and small figures with sheep; in-text woodcut vignettes show market crosses and roofless abbey walls, giving designers distant architectural silhouettes, tree-framed foregrounds and open engraved skies.
