Robert Buchanan's 1868 poetry collection North Coast and other poems, published in London by George Routledge & Sons for a general Victorian reading public, with drawings by Joseph Wolf, Thomas Dalziel, Arthur Boyd Houghton and others cut on wood by the Brothers Dalziel. The 53 wood engravings show fisherfolk and villagers on open shores, night scenes lit by torches, a cloaked figure in a hut doorway watching a storm, and groups bent over a body on the ground, offering coastal landscape backgrounds, grouped standing figures, and dense black shadow for silhouette and texture work.
