WILSON, John - Professor of Moral Philosophy in the University of Edinburgh, Burns, Robert · 1855 · Blackie & Son · 45 pictures

An 1855 Blackie & Son edition of Robert Burns's collected works, carrying James Currie's life of the poet and John Wilson's essay on his genius, issued for Victorian household readers. The plates are steel-engraved Scottish views printed sideways on the page: river gorges, bridges, ruined walls and cottages set behind heavy foreground trees, with finely graded grey skies that give designers ready-made tonal backgrounds, leafy framing arches and silhouetted tree profiles.
