Memoirs of a former pupil of the Smolny Institute for Noble Maidens in St Petersburg, covering 1833-1878, written by Varvara Petrovna Buikova and issued in 1898 with notes by the priest K. Znamensky for a Russian reading public. The plates reproduced here are wood-engraved headpiece bands: symmetrical acanthus scrollwork flanking a central urn or candlestick, with rosette medallions at the ends, some cut white-on-black, usable as rules, chapter headers and repeating borders.
