William Carleton's collected sketches of Irish rural life, issued in a fourth edition by William Tegg in London, 1864, with wood-engraved illustrations after William Harvey and John Gilbert for a general reading public. The scenes show graveyard gatherings, crowded kitchens and wakes, hedgerows and ruined walls, drawn with fine cross-hatching, deep shadow and figures in cloaks, tall hats and shawls.
