William Carleton's collected sketches of rural Irish life, reissued in a fourth edition by William Tegg, London, 1876, for a general British reading public, with plates signed by Hablot K. Browne ('Phiz') and others. The etchings show cabin interiors, schoolrooms, wakes and deathbeds, hedgerow courtship and crowded drinking scenes, useful for figure groups, smoky beamed interiors and open etched line against blank paper.
