A fourth edition of William Carleton's collected sketches of Irish rural life, issued in London by Ward, Lock & Co. in 1881 for a general English-reading public. The 69 wood-engraved plates and text cuts show cottage interiors, roadside crowds of pilgrims, tumbling faction fights and a lone woman among corpses on a battlefield — usable as loose-lined crowd compositions, period country dress and figures grouped in doorways and on benches.
