Syria, the Holy Land, Asia Minor, &c., illustrated. In a series of views drawn from nature by W. H. Bartlett, William Purser (Thomas Allom), &c. With descriptions of the plates by J. Carne. [With maps
A topographical picture book of the eastern Mediterranean, with steel-engraved views drawn on the spot by W. H. Bartlett, Thomas Allom and William Purser and plate descriptions by John Carne, issued in London in 1861 for British armchair travellers and Bible readers. The engravings are wide, pale landscapes of walled towns, ruins and encampments under open skies, with small groups of figures, camels and horses set against mountains; useful for soft grey tonal gradients, silhouetted cypresses and minarets, and foreground groups of loose masonry blocks.
