The Carved Cartoon: a picture of the past
A historical novel of Restoration London set among woodcarvers, written by Wilhelmina Martha James under the pen name Austin Clare and issued by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge in 1874 for a general and juvenile readership. The plates here are line-drawn chapter tailpieces in outline only: symmetrical scrolling foliage, tulip and lily forms rising from strapwork, and fluted vase or shield centres, usable as spot ornaments, heading rules, or vector tracing stock.
