Clarisse: or the Merchant's daughter. A romance
A penny-blood romance issued in weekly parts by Edward Lloyd in London in 1847, sold cheaply to a mass working-class readership and set among French merchants, police agents and conspirators. The 94 wood engravings sit inside columns of letterpress, each paired with a caption of dialogue: candle- and lantern-lit interiors, cellars and barred windows, cloaked and hatted men confronting each other, women in long gowns at tables, drawn with heavy outlines and coarse hatching for cheap printing.
