Doctor Syntax's Three Tours: in search of the picturesque, consolation, and a wife ... The original edition, complete and unabridged, with the life and adventures of the author ... by John Camden Hotten. Eighty full page illustrations drawn and coloured after the originals by T. Rowlandson
A one-volume reissue of William Combe's comic verse tours of Doctor Syntax, published by John Camden Hotten in London in 1868 for Victorian readers, with eighty plates redrawn and hand-coloured after Thomas Rowlandson. The caricatures set a gaunt clergyman among crowds, inns, parlours and libraries in washed pinks, greens and yellows, offering comic figure groups, period interiors and street processions.
