Poems ... With a biographical and critical introduction by the Rev. Thomas Dale, and seventy-five illustrations, engraved by J. Orrin Smith, from drawings by John Gilbert
An illustrated edition of William Cowper's poems issued by Tilt & Bogue in London in 1841, with a biographical introduction by Thomas Dale and seventy-five wood engravings cut by J. Orrin Smith after drawings by John Gilbert, aimed at Victorian household readers. The plates are pale, loosely hatched vignettes without borders: garden arbours, firesides, sickbeds and cottage doorways with figures in eighteenth-century dress, useful as light-toned spot images and soft-edged scene fragments.
