The Ban of Maplethorpe ... With a memoir of the author
A posthumous edition of Edward Heneage Dering's novel, issued with a memoir of the author by the Art & Book Company, London, in 1894 for a late-Victorian Catholic reading public. Halftone plates reproduce wash drawings of a gabled country house and a picture-hung interior in soft grey tones, while the text pages carry square-framed initial letters with line-drawn violets and vine leaves, useful as drop caps, borders and muted architectural backdrops.
