Works of Charles Dickens. New illustrated library edition. [With a preface to each work by Edwin P. Whipple
A multi-volume collected edition of Charles Dickens's novels, issued in the later nineteenth century as a "new illustrated library edition" with prefaces by the American critic Edwin P. Whipple, aimed at general household readers. The plates are engraved comic narrative scenes in the Phiz manner, set in soft oval vignettes with hatched backgrounds: crowded parlours and shops, brawls and courtroom benches, with signboards, framed pictures, spilled crockery and dogs filling the corners, useful for period interiors, caricatured figure types and vignette framing.
