Works of Charles Dickens. New illustrated library edition. [With a preface to each work by Edwin P. Whipple
A multi-volume library edition of Charles Dickens's novels, issued in the later nineteenth century with prefaces by the American critic Edwin P. Whipple for general household readers. The plates are etched narrative scenes in the Phiz manner: cramped parlours, shops and offices where small figures in frock coats, bonnets and crinolines gesture at each other, drawn in fine grey hatching with vignetted edges and detailed backgrounds of pictures, shelves and furniture usable as period interior reference.
