Works of Charles Dickens. New illustrated library edition. [With a preface to each work by Edwin P. Whipple
A multi-volume collected edition of Charles Dickens's novels, issued in the later nineteenth century as a "new illustrated library edition" with a preface to each work by the American critic Edwin P. Whipple, aimed at household and subscription-library readers. The plates are wood-engraved narrative scenes in the Phiz tradition: crowded parlours, taprooms and street corners built from dense hatching, with caricatured faces, flying coat-tails and wide skirts that read well as silhouettes or vignette cut-outs.
