Works of Charles Dickens. New illustrated library edition. [With a preface to each work by Edwin P. Whipple
A late nineteenth-century collected edition of Dickens's novels, issued with prefaces by the American critic Edwin P. Whipple for middle-class household libraries and reprinting the original English etchings by Hablot K. Browne ('Phiz') and his contemporaries. The plates are soft-edged vignettes of Victorian interiors crowded with incident: dinner tables with bottles and candlesticks, parlour gatherings of women in wide skirts, a ship-chandler's room hung with instruments and charts, all useful for period furniture, costume silhouettes and cluttered domestic backgrounds.
