Works of Charles Dickens. New illustrated library edition. [With a preface to each work by Edwin P. Whipple
A multi-volume collected edition of Charles Dickens's novels, issued in the later nineteenth century with prefaces by the American critic Edwin P. Whipple for household and library readers. The plates are etched comic interiors in the manner of Hablot K. Browne: parlours, lodgings and offices packed with top-hatted men, wide-skirted women and scrambling children, drawn with light hatching and open white space that suits vignette cropping, spot use and figure tracing.
