Works of Charles Dickens. New illustrated library edition. [With a preface to each work by Edwin P. Whipple
A multi-volume reissue of Charles Dickens's novels with prefaces by the American critic Edwin P. Whipple, issued in the later nineteenth century for household libraries and reusing George Cruikshank's etched plates for Oliver Twist. The scenes are cramped interiors and street corners peopled with boys, thieves and top-hatted men, drawn in fine etched line with heavy shadow and signed in a looping hand.
