Works of Charles Dickens. New illustrated library edition. [With a preface to each work by Edwin P. Whipple
A late nineteenth-century illustrated library edition of Dickens's works, issued with prefaces by the American critic Edwin P. Whipple for general household readers. The plates, etched in the manner of Phiz and Cruikshank, show crowded street scuffles, gaslit house fronts, hung kitchens and parlours, and stump-orators mobbed by onlookers, offering period costume, interior clutter and closely packed crowd groupings.
