Works of Charles Dickens. New illustrated library edition. [With a preface to each work by Edwin P. Whipple
A multi-volume collected edition of Charles Dickens's novels with prefaces by the American critic Edwin P. Whipple, issued for household libraries in the later nineteenth century and carrying reproductions of the original serial etchings by Hablot Knight Browne (Phiz) and his fellow illustrators. The plates are fine-lined interiors crowded with figures — lodgings, offices, sickrooms and lawyers' chambers rendered in hatched grey tones, with furniture, mantel clutter, bedcurtains and dogs filling the corners — useful for period costume, cramped room perspectives and grouped figure staging.
