A multi-volume illustrated library edition of Charles Dickens's novels, issued in the later nineteenth century with prefaces by the American critic Edwin P. Whipple for general readers. The plates are etched narrative scenes in the Hablot K. Browne manner, set in oval vignettes with soft edges: crowded parlours, kitchens and theatre boxes rendered in fine hatching, useful for period interiors, costume and figure grouping.
