Works of Charles Dickens. New illustrated library edition. [With a preface to each work by Edwin P. Whipple
A multi-volume collected edition of Charles Dickens's novels, each work prefaced by the American critic Edwin P. Whipple and reissued with new illustrations in the later nineteenth century for general family readers. The plates are light-toned wood engravings of interiors and street corners, with small groups of figures in 1840s dress, hatched shading and much blank paper around them.
