The Letters of Charles Dickens. Edited by his sister-in-law and his eldest daughter
A late-Victorian Macmillan edition of Dickens's letters, edited in 1893 by Georgina Hogarth and Mamie Dickens for readers who already knew the novels, printed with wood-engraved plates carried over from the illustrated fiction. The scenes are small textual vignettes in the Phiz manner: inn taprooms, panelled parlours, vaulted prison cells with wall chains, figures in eighteenth-century coats and cocked hats, hatched lightly at the edges so they sit as spot art on a page.
