The Letters of Charles Dickens. Edited by his sister-in-law and his eldest daughter
An 1893 Macmillan edition of Charles Dickens's collected letters, assembled in London by his sister-in-law Georgina Hogarth and his daughter Mamie and illustrated in the manner of his novels for Victorian readers who already knew the fiction. The wood-engraved vignettes sit inside the text block without frames, showing card games by candlelight, loafers among tombstones, kitchen larders piled with provisions and inn doorways crowded with travellers, useful for cross-hatched crowd groupings, period costume and small interior props.
