Bleak House ... With illustrations by H. K. Browne
Charles Dickens's serial novel Bleak House, issued in London in 1853 with steel etchings by Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz"), this copy carrying additional plates by Frederick William Pailthorpe for Victorian novel-readers and collectors. The etchings are lightly bitten interior scenes with captions in engraved script, grouping figures around tables, fireplaces and cluttered offices, useful for period costume, furniture silhouettes and crowded-room staging.
