The personal history of David Copperfield ... With illustrations by H. K. Browne
The first book edition of Dickens's novel, published in London in 1850 with forty steel etchings by Hablot Knight Browne ('Phiz'), issued for the serial-reading Victorian public. The plates show domestic interiors and inns crowded with figures in early-Victorian dress, with engraved captions below, fine hatched shading and oval vignette borders useful for period costume, furniture and group staging.
