Maria Edgeworth's 1801 novel of manners reissued by Macmillan in 1896, with forty pen drawings by Chris Hammond and an introduction by Anne Thackeray Ritchie, aimed at late-Victorian readers of reprinted classics. The drawings stage two or three figures in drawing rooms, built from fine hatched line on white ground: Regency high-waisted gowns, caps, tailcoats, armchairs, sideboards and captioned dialogue.
