Helen ... Illustrated by C. Hammond. With an introduction by Anne Thackeray Ritchie
Maria Edgeworth's 1834 novel Helen, reissued by Macmillan in London in 1896 for general readers, with an introduction by Anne Thackeray Ritchie and forty plates by Chris Hammond. The drawings are pen-and-ink line work of Regency-dress figures in drawing rooms — high-waisted gowns, bonnets, tailcoats and breeches — set against plain walls, framed pictures and simple chairs, with italic dialogue captions beneath; useful for costume silhouettes, hatching textures and figure groupings.
