Edith the Captive; or, the Robbers of Epping Forest. By the author of “Jane Brightwell,” [i.e. J. M. Rymer.] etc

RYMER, James Malcolm. · 1861 · 51 pictures

A penny-serial melodrama of 1861 by James Malcolm Rymer, published in London for a working-class readership buying weekly parts. The wood engravings stage eighteenth-century costume scenes — tricorn hats, swords drawn in panelled rooms, women in wide skirts, crowds around a king — with heavy cross-hatched shadow and figures caught mid-gesture, useful for period dress, dramatic poses and interior furnishings.
