Inside Out Library

Robinson Crusoe's own book; or, the voice of adventure from the civilized man cut off from his fellows ... and from the wanderer in strange seas and lands, etc

ELLMS, Charles. · 1842 · 79 pictures

A popular anthology of shipwreck, castaway and travel narratives compiled by Charles Ellms and published in 1842 for general American readers who bought cheap illustrated adventure books. The 79 wood engravings mix small headpiece vignettes — a sinking brig, a runaway horse, smoke on a flat sea — with full-page plates of fleets and line-of-battle actions, giving designers stark black-line shipping, ruled skies and stock-cut sea textures.
