HOWARD, Joseph Jackson. · 1866 · Samuel Tymms · 50 pictures

A county heraldic visitation record, first compiled by the herald William Hervey in 1561 and re-edited with manuscript additions by Joseph Jackson Howard in 1866 for Suffolk antiquaries and genealogists. Line engravings show shields quartered and impaled, with crests, coronets, mantling and ermine drapery, and letters marking tincture — a source of clean outline heraldic motifs, beasts, sheaves and chevrons.
