A German-language edition of Tombleson's Thames, issued in 1834 by the London publisher William Tombleson with descriptive text by William Gray Fearnside, sold to tourists and armchair travellers following the river from source to sea. The 86 steel engravings are pale tinted views of villages, bridges, churches and sailing barges, each set in an engraved ornamental frame of interlaced strapwork and scrollwork that can be lifted as a border or cartouche on its own.
