A botanical monograph by Antoine Laurent Apollinaire Fée, published in Paris in 1824, cataloguing the lichens found on imported medicinal barks for pharmacists, drug inspectors and cryptogamic botanists. Hand-coloured engraved plates set curved bark fragments against blank ground, each paired with a magnified square of its surface, so the markings read as script-like scribbles, ring clusters, dark dots and worm-track lines usable as pattern, texture swatch or abstract mark-making.
