An anonymous English moral tale of 1890, published by G. Cauldwell and credited to the author of "Brotherhood," aimed at readers of improving domestic fiction. The 43 pictures are almost all decorated chapter initials: single letters set in dark panels of small flowers and leaves, hung with trailing vine stems, buds and knobbed finials, printed as fine line engraving above verse epigraphs — a usable alphabet of ornamental drop caps and vertical foliate borders.
