A one-volume household anthology of British poetry from Chaucer to 1878, edited by James T. Fields and Edwin Percy Whipple and issued by Houghton in 1881 for American family and school readers. The eighteen plates are steel-engraved oval bust portraits of poets, vignetted in fine stipple and line against bare paper, each with an engraved facsimile signature beneath: usable as ready-made author medallions, oval frame shapes, and specimens of nineteenth-century signature lettering.
