The Human Race, ... illustrated by ... engravings on wood, and ... chromolithographs
A popular ethnography of the world's peoples, Louis Figuier's French text adapted by Robert Wilson and published in London in 1875 for general readers, with wood engravings and chromolithographs. The plates are full-figure portraits and small genre scenes in fine cross-hatched line — a Cheyenne chief in feathered headdress with bow and lance, a Peruvian interpreter with staff, a Russian sentinel in a snowy gateway — supplying costume detail, weapon and tool silhouettes, and figures set against light stippled backgrounds that cut out cleanly.
